PCIM: Infineon adds PFC boost stage to motor module

At the PCIM power electronics exhibition in Nuremberg this morning Infineon Technologies will be showing an intelligent power module (IPM) which has a single switch boost power factor correction (PFC) stage. The power module also integrates a 3 phase inverter in one package.
It is designed to control induction motors and permanent magnet synchronous motors with single-phase PFC in variable speed drives. These are typically found in low-power motor drives of up to 2kW power capability.
Designated the CIPOS Mini, the power module, which makes use of an external driver circuit to boost switching performance, combines an IGBT with a silicon on isolator (SOI) gate driver to achieve its electrical performance.
The modules are available in inverter current ratings of 4A, 6A, 10A, and 15A. Designers can choose between PFC switching frequency of 20kHz or 40kHz.
The package is designed to allow EMI-safe control and delivers overload protection.
The CIPOS Mini PFC integrated IPMs will be available in volume production with 10 A and 15 A devices in June 2017. 4 A and 6 A will be available during the 3 rd quarter 2017.
