China to put EV quotas on car manufacturers,

China is to ramp up its EV ambitions by putting quotas on domestic vehicle producers which will oblige them to make a set percentage of their total vehicle production electric.
A company producing 1.2 million EVs in China a year will be obliged to produce 20-30,000 EVs.
The quotas are to take effect from 2019.
China made more EVs than any other country in 2015. Last year, 260,000 EVs were sold in China.
It has set a target to sell 7 million EVs by 2025 which would require a major expansion in its electricity generation capability.
Although the China government cites environmental considerations as the motivation for the EV policy it is calculated that with 70% of China’s electric power coming from coal-fired generation, China-made EVs generate 82 grams of CO2 every kilometre driven measured by the amount of CO2 emitted during the entire process from fuel production to driving – compared to 69 grams generated by hybrids.
The average new petrol engine car emits 120 grams per km – a figure which the EU aims to reduce to 95 grams per km by 2021.
