France aims to ban internal combustion engine by 2040

French ecology minister Nicholas Hulot says France will end the sale of internal combustion engine cars by 2040.
The announcement follows Volvo’s announcement earlier this week that it will only make hybrid and electric cars from 2019.
Over 95% of French cars have internal combustion engines with electric cars representing 1.2% of the total and hybrids representing 3.5%.
While welcoming the aspiration, Greenpeace put out a statement asking for detail on how the 2040 target could be achieved.
