Qualcomm boosts machine learning capability by buying Scyfer

Qualcomm has bought Amsterdam University affiliate Scyfer, a machine learning specialist.
Scyfer is into computer vision, computer-aided healthcare, computer-human interaction and AI-based financial features all areas which Apple is trying to incorporate in the IPhone.
Qualcomm’s strategy is to deliver equivalent features to the Android community via its SnapDragon APs.
“Our current products now support many AI use cases from computer vision and natural language processing to malware detection on a variety of devices,” says Qualcomm’s Matt Grob, “we are researching broader topics, such as AI for wireless connectivity, power management and photography.”
Qualcomm says that, instead being reliant on the cloud for delivering intelligence to machines, it wants machine learning to be localised i.e. possible without cellular or WiFi connectivity.
