  • Release on:2018-09-12
Later today Theresa May is to tell the inaugural Zero Emission Vehicle Summit in Birmingham that the government will inject £106 million into the development of zero emission vehicles.

The £106 million fund will be spent on developing low-emission vehicles and hydrogen technology.

A further £500 million is to be invested by industry to create over a thousand jobs in the sector.

“I want to see Britain, once again, leading from the front and working with industries and countries around the world to spearhead change,” she is expected to say, “that is why I have set this country an ambitious mission. To put the UK at the forefront of the design and manufacturing of zero-emission vehicles and for all new cars and vans to be effectively zero-emission by 2040.”

May will also say that every car and van in the UK will be zero-emission by 2050.

In Birmingham May will hold talks with suppliers from the US, Germany, Japan, China, Spain and India.

A project called the ‘Birmingham Deceleration’ will be unveiled  to promote the deployment of green vehicles and the introduction of zero-emission infrastructure.

The first countries to sign up to the Birmingham Deceleration are Italy, France, Denmark, UAE, Portugal, Belarus and Indonesia.

May will say that EVs made in Britain already account for 20% of sales of the eco-friendly vehicles in Europe.
