Li-ion thermal knowledge pooled into one place

US researchers have collated the temperature performance of different Li-ion cell technologies with a view to improving batteries.

“People have not looked that studiously at temperature constraints. We searched hard to find one paper that talks about all the problems at the same time and what all the individual components experience at extreme temperatures, and we couldn’t find one,” said researcher Dr Hemtej Gullapalli.

Poor temperature range is a real issue, even in consumer applications – few people know typical consumer cells cannot be charged below 0°C without damage.

Extensive research has gone into anodes, cathodes and electrolytes.

“People have done amazing work. They’ve touched almost the whole periodic table and all the permutations and combinations have been tested. Now we’re into the engineering phase where we know the materials’ limitations and we are trying to break down the barriers,” said Gullapalli.

For example, said the team, water-based electrolytes like lead-acid and nickel-metal hydride operate between -50 and +50C, while molten salt batteries work only above 90C. Batteries with lithium thionyl chloride operate between -60 and 150C, but best form 20 to 55C.
