EU considering second fine on Google

  • Author:Ella Cai
  • Release on:2017-07-06
The EU is contemplating another fine on Google – this time for abuse of its dominant position in mobile OS via Android.

Last month, the EU fined Google $2.7 billion for abuse of its dominant position in search. It followed this up by encouraging companies to bring civil lawsuits against Google for favouring its own shopping comparison site over rivals’ sites in Google searches.

The EU has now set up a panel to review Google’s practices in managing its Android mobile OS. Such panels normally come up with decision within a month.

The complaint is about Google requiring phone users to instal Google Search and Chrome in order to be able to access other services and about bundling features like Google Play with the OS.

The EU says the abuses date back to 2011.

The complaint was brought by the lobbying group, FairSearch, the US ad-blocker firm Disconnect, the Portuguese apps vendor Aptoide and Yandex of Russia.
