EPYC enthuses AMD investors

AMD’s EPYC server chip is driving a rise in AMD shares.

EPYC out-performs Intel’s server processors in performance and power and has managed to create an EPYC ecosystem containing server OEMs, ODMs and cloud infrastructure providers.

EPYC, which is a scaled up version of its PC CPU Ryzen, beats Intel’s best server processor in memory bandwidth, performance per watt and allows data centres to pack servers more densely so reducing data centre TCO.

With Intel’s process lead slipping away, the 14nm EPYC has been able to beat Intel on performance and a transition to Globalfoundries’ 7nm process may extend that lead.

EPYC processors range from the EPYC 7251 – an eight-core, 16-thread chip running at 2.1 to 2.9GHz with 120W power to the EPYC 7601: a 32-core, 64-thread running at 2.2 to 3.2GHz, with 180W power.
