Northern Manufacturing Show: A good time to show off

Caroline Hayes shares some of the highlights for visitors to the Northern Manufacturing & Electronics show in Manchester.

The internet of things (IoT) and 3D technology feature at Northern Manufacturing & Electronics 2017 (27-28 September), alongside more conventional manufacturing and electronics, illustrates the mix of the industry and the breadth of the event.

Visitors to the show – the fifth annual edition of the event – will see a range of electronics companies, some based in the north-west, some at the show for the first time in recognition of the customer base in the area. Among the products and services on show will be cables, displays and contract electronics manufacturing services.

Connectors, displays, power supplies

Cable manufacturer Fischer Connectors (stand B7) will exhibit its push-pull connectors for robotic technology, sensors and inspection.

They are rugged to minimise vibration, withstand extremes of temperature and resist moisture in harsh environments.

Merseyside specialist Helukabel UK (stand D43) provides cables, wires and cable accessories for a range of industries, including robotics, power, automation, wind turbine and solar.

There are also displays (LCD, OLED, e-paper and embedded technology) from Buckinghamshire’s Craft Data (stand A80) and power supplies, batteries and battery chargers on the Haredata Electronics stand (stand C14).

Test and measurement

AIID Solutions (stand G13) designs and manufactures instrumentation for data acquisition, monitoring and control, while Nikon Metrology (stand D2) provides 3D scanning and 3D inspection equipment for industrial measurement.

Contract manufacturing

Contract electronics manufacturers figure strongly among the exhibitors, including: LCL Electronics (stand D1)

Trojan Electronics (stand A55), Precision Manufacturing (PML) (stand D25) and DJ Assembly, specialising in PCB assembly and electronic manufacturing services (stand D37).

Visitors can also discuss electronics manufacturing and design services at Corintech (stand B43), PCB manufacture and assembly at European Circuits (stand E62), sub-contract electronics manufacturing services at Industrial Electronic Wiring (stand A56) and electronics assembly at UK Electronics (stand G31).

Don’t miss these

Elsewhere, the show’s line-up of test highlights includes a display of modular signal switching and simulation for use in electronic test and verification from Pickering Interfaces (stand E61).

The company offers products for PXI, LXI and PCI applications, with a range of supporting cables and connectors.

It has an in-house software team that has created application software and drivers.

The company claims to be the only switch provider with an in-house reed relay manufacturing capability.

Over time electronics become obsolete and spares are no longer available. UNIS Group – EDMR (stand B25) will showcase its repair and replacement service to further the life of equipment, including preventative maintenance, to identify potential failures before they become critical and to allow maintenance to be carried out during planned shutdowns.
Re connecting

LEMO Anglissimo

Connectors, too, will be on display, notably the rotatable, right-angled Anglissimo range of connectors from Lemo (UK) (stand F7).
These are push-pull connectors that allow users to configure cable exit angles during installation, which simplifies assembly and reduces the inventory of connectors required, to minimise system cost.
Visitors to Lemo’s stand will also see an overview of the company’s recently expanded cable assembly design and manufacturing capabilities.
Services available include the design of complex cable assemblies requiring the precise termination of a many cable and wire types including fibre optics, for use in harsh environments.
Seminars

Another feature of the two-day event is the seminar programme, which is free to attend, although seats are limited. Booking via www.industry.co.uk is recommended by the organisers.

Topics will include best practices for lean manufacturing; the impact of forthcoming data protection regulations; CE marking; 3D printing; and the internet of things (IoT).

In an introduction to 3D printing and the what it can offer manufacturers, Robert Pitts, Stratasys sales manager at Tri-Tech 3D (stand F139) will look at the use of 3D printing for prototyping, testing new products and creating bespoke designs.

Among the case studies he will discuss will be the Airbus A350 XWB’s use of around 1,000 3D printed components in the cabin, instrumentation and ducting in the wings to save weight. (Wednesday 1.10pm, and Thursday 10.50am)

And as the IoT continues apace, Alistair Williamson, MD at Lucid Innovation, will present ‘Connect your future to the Internet of Things (Thursday, 2pm)’.

He says that about 90% of the design company’s work is to do with connected devices, and the seminar will cover the different protocols used and the challenges of the IoT.
