NI radar test system targets autonomous vehicle design

NI has introduced a system for testing car radar technology.
The system is designed around millimetre-wave (mmWave) front end technology to test 76–81GHz radar systems which are being used in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
NI VRTSThe system, dubbed VRTS, uses a 76–81GHz vector signal generator/analyser designed for dynamic obstacle generation and comprehensive RF characteristic measurements.
Use of both traditional and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test techniques are intended to help in the design of autonomous driving systems. This allows system and sensor configurations to combine GNSS, radar, cameras and lidar functions.
The test system scales from a base configuration that can emulate two obstacles to configurations that can emulate four independent obstacles per PXI chassis.
It can be used to simulate Doppler effect velocity of up to 250km/hr, minimum obstacle range of 4m, object distance resolution down to 10cm, support for multiple angles of arrival and variable radar cross sections.
The system software allows allows it to simulate scenarios ranging from a pedestrian walking across the street to lane-change driving scenarios.
NI will distribute the VRTS through VRTS Specialty Partners including Hirain Technologies, Konrad Technologies, Linktron and Noffz Computer Technik.
