9ns minimum on-time enables 2MHz high-ratio dc-dc converter : 2.5V from 60V

A 9ns minimum on-time has allowed Rohm to offer a 60Vto 2.5V dc-dc converter – a 24:1 step-down ratio – that runs at 2MHz, claiming this to be a world first.Worst case minimum on-time is 20ns.

Called BD9V100MUF-C, the BiCDMOS chip includes output mosfets and is aimed at 48V automotive systems. 2MHz operation keeps it out of the 2MHz the AM radio band (1.84MHz max).

“While 2MHz operation is always required for automotive systems, until now there has not been a power supply IC capable of stepping down 48V to the 3.3V or 5V needed for ECU drive, typically involving 2-stage step down to an intermediate voltage such as 12V,” said the firm.

Helpfully, the data sheet includes a automotive front-end filter reference design (page 29).

Protections include: over-current, Input under-voltage, input over-voltage and thermal shut-down. Reverse input protection is not on the list, so the front-end reference design includes a diode.

Qualification is to AEC-Q100 Grade 1, soft-start is included, and control is current mode – there is a pin for loop compensation.

The chip has been sampling for a while, and is due to be in full production next month.
