French extend influence over ST

The French could be taking control of ST away from the Italians.

Frenchman Nicholas Dufourcq (pictured) has been elected Chairman of ST’s supervisory board to succeed the Italian Maurizio Tamagnini.

Dufourcq is an Enarc –  a graduate of France’s elite Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA). He is chairman of the French state-owned bank Bpifrance.

Two months ago, the Frenchman Jean-Marc Chery was made ST’s deputy CEO in a move seen as nominating him the successor to CEO Carlo Bozotti who retires next May.
France and Italy share, equally, a 27.5% stake in ST following its founding as a merger between SGS-Ates of Italy and Thomson of France.

However ST’s CEO has always been Italian because, it is alleged, the Italian government refuses to allow the appointment of Frenchmen.

While the Italians want to run ST as a provider of specialised components to particular industrial segments the French have always wanted it to be Europe’s digital champion – competing at the leading edge with the best of the world’s semiconductor companies.
